1982
Koplan, Jeffery P. | Powell, Kenneth E. | Sikes, R. Keith | Shirley, Renee W. | Campbell, C.C.
A benefits/risks analysis for recreational running was determined by questionnaires sent to 2500 randomly selected runners (50% male, 50% female) entered in a 10-km race; 55% of the men and 58% of the women responded. Nonrespondents were followed up by telephone. Most runners (81% men, 75% women) who smoked when they began runnig quit after beginning. Weight loss was achieved by a number of overweight runners, but more than 1/3 of the respondents had musculoskeletal injury attributed to running. Risk of injury increased with higher weekly milage. Epidemiologic methods were used to qualify some of the benefits/risks of running. (kbc)
