Collagens are a family of proteins that constitute the major extracellular proteins found in the body. Most tissues and organs contain several types of collagen whose function is primarily structural. This article covers: 1) collagen types and tissue distribution; 2) The effects of amino acid deficiency on collagen integrity; 3) The role of vitamins A, C, and E on collagen metabolism; and 4) Mineral balance and bone homeostasis as related to collagen metabolism.
