The mutual impact of family behavior on the social and natural environment and the constraints of the environment on family decision making are demonstrated by viewing the family as an ecosystem. Accounts of high, medium, and low energy families are provided. Amounts of direct energy and indirect energy consumption are examined, and needed energy conservation measures are pointed out. Some actions being taken by home economists are described. Tables show sources of household energy use and energy units expended in selected countries.
