Casein, a major protein of milk and a milk product is an important part of the food industry. In 1980, 152.2 million pounds of casein were imported into the US, while 76.2 million pounds were used in various food products and 25.9 million pounds were used in animal feed production. Because of existing legislation on price supports, federal policy may lead to restrictions on casein imports, which could effect present domestic casein users. Such restrictions could result in price increases and the use of substitutes. A limited tariff could have a similar effect. Data are provided on the 1980 use of casein and casein mixtures in foods, and feeds, and for industrial applications (e.g., glues, paper products). (wz)
