Efficacy of dietary treatment: A weight reduction study on 750 obese patients
1980
Leelarthaepin, Boonseng | Steinbeck, Alfred W.
Analysis of dietary treatment of 750 obese clinic patients was done to determine what factors seem to influence the patient's ability to lose weight and not regain it. Dietary prescription alone is usually inadequate; the environmental, psychological, and motivational factors are very important. Patients must be made more aware of the health hazards of obesity and commit themselves to a change of lifestyle and attitude. Of the patients referred to the clinic, 25% did not return after the initial contact; younger women defaulted more than older women. Women were more successful than men. Default was related to type of referral and occupation, but not to initial body weight. Only 20% of the continuing patients were able to lose 9 kg or more.
