High levels of spontaneous drug resistance in Lactobacillus
1992
Curragh, H.J. | Collins, M.A.
A range of lactobacilli was screened to find the naturally occurring levels of drug resistance. During the screening process two cultures exhibited variation in their sensitivity to nitrofurazone. Further examination showed that for a number of lactobacilli, nitrofurazone-resistant cells arose at a high spontaneous frequency (10(-4)-10(-5)). The frequency/rate of mutation to resistance was investigated for a further five antibiotics, the results suggesting that high spontaneous mutation frequencies are not uncommon.
