The electrophoretic mapping of a number of yeast strains from the genus Saccharomyces is described. In addition to inter-specific differences in number and electrophoretic mobility of a large proportion of chromosomal DNA, less pronounced karyotypic differences were found in isolated genetic lines derived from Saccharomyces cerevisiae race XII. During hybridization between Petergof genetic lines of Sacch. cerevisiae and Sacch. cerevisiae (var. vini) 2-M437, which differ in regard to the number and mobility of chromosome DNA bands, an irregular inheritance of parent chromosomes and intensive generation of new forms (appearance of new chromosomal modifications) were found. Back-crossing of the progeny from this hybrid in strains of the Petergof genetic lines led to a decrease in chromosomal polymorphism within the limits of 1-2 generations with the subsequent stabilization of karyotypes, with the exception of Mendelian dimorphism with respect to chromosome III.
