This study proposes a packaging design with dual function films to simultaneously achieve accurate control of water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) and O₂ transmission rate (OTR) (CO₂ transmission rate). The modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) used in this work consists of an inert airtight tray with a lid film. The lid film is composed of an O film and a W film with an area ratio of 4:1. The O film primarily supplies O₂, and the W film mainly improves water vapor transmission. Using the WO MAP prolongs the shelf life of wax apples from 2 days to more than 5 days at 25 °C. Compared with the control group, the wax apples packaged in WO MAP show bright colors and high water content, hardness, vitamin C, total soluble solid (TSS), titratable acidity (TA), and content of other nutrients. These characteristics make a higher commercial value of wax apples.
