Zinc nutritional status of young middle-income children and effects of consuming zinc-fortified breakfast cereals

Two groups of school children participated in a 9-month study to determine the effects of dietary zinc supplementation and to assess nutritional status for zinc. The test group ate breakfast cereal fortified with an average 2.57 mg per day, raising intake to the Recommended Dietary Allowance. At the end of the test period, plasma zinc for the test group was 6.5 microgm./dl greater than controls; test girls had higher hair zinc content than controls; there were no significant differences in plasma copper or serum cholesterol. Food intake and growth velocity were not affected, though unexplained sexual and seasonal differences were noted. The need for zinc has not been fully defined, but in the light of marginal intakes of children, zinc fortification seems a sensible undertaking.
