Hospitality, women, and the efficacy of beer
1987
March, K.S.
A behavioral overview focusing on associations between women, food, fertility, health, and prosperity, outlines 3 general characteristics of these associations (the assertion of a balanced reciprocity; the ambivalence surrounding the relative social statuses of participants; and the use of hospitality as a model for religious worship), and provides a detailed examination of the importance of female symbols of medication in human and divine hospitality exchanges. It is pointed out that hospitality, which women proffer, induces and reflects those distinctive reciprocal exchanges around which Tamang and Sherpa society (highland Buddhist populations residing in Nepal) forms. Photographs illustrating social hospitality provided by Tamang and Sherpa hosts are included.(wz)
