In the present investigation, commercial probiotics preparations were assessed in the control of necrotic enteritis (NE). One hundred and sixty day old Ross broiler chicks (eight groups, twenty chicks each) were fed with commercial probiotics or without probiotics. The birds in the experimental groups were challenged with E. acervulina oocyst on 11ᵗʰ day followed by C. perfringens on 14ᵗʰ, 15ᵗʰ and 16ᵗʰ days. There was statistically significant different (P<0.01) body weight between NE induced broiler chicks treated with probiotics group and probiotics untreated group on 28ᵗʰ day. During the experiment, five per cent mortality was noticed only in NE induced probiotics untreated group of Ross broiler chicks. The lesion score was more in NE induced birds untreated with probiotics. There is a significant difference in mean C. perfringens count between NE induced broiler chicks treated with probiotics group and probiotics untreated group. Histology of intestine revealed aggregation of oocyst, bacterial colony, degenerated leukocytes, mononuclear infiltration in submucosa and congestion in serous surface in NE induced probiotics untreated group. Tip of the villi get ruptured. In case of NE induced probiotics treated group only mild haemorrhages and moderated disruption of the villi was noticed in the intestine. Moderate amount of oocysts and bacterial colonies were present in the intestine. The present experimental trial revealed that probiotics are effective in the control of clinical and subclinical form of NE.
