A field experiment was used to study the effects of organic fertilizer with reduced nitrate content (JZ) on yield and quality of Brassica campestris L. with basal fertilization and topdressing. Compared with common urea at the same nitrogen (N)-application level, JZ increased B. campestris L. yield by 3.4 and 33.7% for application rates of 270 and 360 kg N ha-1, respectively, with the latter significantly higher (p‹0.05). Moreover, this correspondingly significantly increased the content of residual soil ammonium-N by 211.0 and 195.4% and significantly decreased the nitrate-N content by 84.2 and 77.2%, respectively. Thus, the ratio of soil ammonium-N to nitrate-N was improved. The nitrate concentrations of B. campestris L. were significantly decreased by 41.32-69.84% for all N-application treatments, and nitrate reductase activity was reduced by 26.67-81.11%. The JZ fertilizer simultaneously increased yield and decreased the nitrate content of B. campestris L. and in soil, which has potential benefits for human health and the environment.
