Crop Moisture Measurements for Combines
1987
Quails, David E. | Miles, Gaines E.
Because moisture is a primary determinant of crop properties which affect threshability, a hand-held sensor could become important in determining when to adjust a combine for optimum performance. The feasibility and accuracy of using a commercially-available forage moisture tester to measure crop moisture content has been determined for wheat and soybeans. For samples up to 25% moisture, a strong correlation existed between the sensor reading and the crop moisture content, provided the sample was ground to provide consistent density. These results indicate that capacitance-type forage moisture meters may be useful in measuring crop moisture changes which necessitate adjustments for optimum combine performance.
