Phytochemical evaluation of sesuvium portulaca strum extracts

Sesuvium portulacastrum (Family Aizoaceae) is a halophyte known for its antimicrobial and antifungal activity. The Methanol extract of this plant showed higher proportion of phenolics and flavonoids. Total phenolic content, expressed as gallic acid equivalent, ranged from 6.3±0.4mg GAE/g dry weight in petroleum ether extract of whole plant to 10.83±0.7mg GAE/g dry weight in methanol extract of stem. On the other hand, total flavonoid content expressed as quercetin equivalents ranged from 9.2±0.9mg QE/g dry weight in ethyl acetate extract of whole plant to 33.8±0.9mg QE/g dry weight inmethanol extract ofleaf. Antioxidant activity was highest(86.3 ±3.2%) in methanol extract.
