Dietetic food diarrhea
1980
Ravry, Mario J.R.
The hexitols (sorbitol and mannitol) have well-documented, diarrhea-causing tendencies and are used in sugar-free weight reduction products. Consumption of even moderate amounts can result in clinically detectable diarrhea, illustrated by the man who consumed 50 g per day in the form of chewing gum, mints, and dietetic wafers and candy bars as an aid in reducing weight. The use of hexitols is becoming so widespread as to warrant labeling the ensuing phenomenon "dietetic food diarrhea" and including inquiries about use of dietetic foods in all cases of persistent diarrhea.
