Body content of selenium in coeliac disease
1984
Hinks, Lesley J. | Inwards, Karen D. | Lloyd, Barbara | Clayton, Barbara E.
Concentrations of selenium were significantly lower in the leucocytes, blood and plasma of 16 patients with coeliac disease confirmed by biopsy than 32 controls. All patients were clinically well and receiving a gluten-free diet. These findings probably indicate a decrease in total body content of selenium. A protective role for selenium against cancer has been postulated. The high incidence of malignancy in coeliac disease patients requires further study of the association of selenium and the gluten-free diet. (emc)
