Reacting to sulfites
1985
Lecos, C.
The increased public awareness and concern of the potential health hazards of sulfites and sulfiting agents as food additives are discussed, and FDA's activities concerning the use of sulfites are described. Asthmatics are the primary population at risk. Through mid-September 1985, the number of complaints alleging adverse reactions to FDA has grown to about 850, with 20 reported deaths. The critical public comments that followed FDA's 1982 proposed regulation to affirm the safety of various sulfiting agents in foods led to 2 1985 FDA proposed regulations to: declare the presence of sulfites on product labels if over 10 ppm; and to revoke the "generally recognized as safe" (GRAS) status of sulfites used on raw produce. Aspects of these actions are discussed, and a list of major foods containing sulfites is given.(wz)
