A field study was conducted to compare different methods to estimate N2 fixation on common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.). Nodule dry weight, acetylene reduction activity (ARA), ureide content, and 15N (isotope dilution technique) were measured. The 15N isotope dilution method showed that the highest N2 fixation rate occurred during early reproductive stage [70 to 77 days after planting (dap)]. During this period, nodule dry weight and ARA decreased considerably. Ureide content in stems during early reproductive stage (70 dap) showed a positive correlation (r = 0.7304**) with N2 fixation measured by the isotopic method. Ureide content in stems at R7 can be employed as an effective indirect method for determining N2 fixation potential in common bean grown in field conditions.
