The objective of this experiment was to compare the effects of irrigation strategy (RDI vs. PRD) and the restoration volume (40% ETc vs. 80% ETc) on vegetative and productive characteristics of 'Vermentino'. A three year trial was carried out in South Sardinia from 2009-2011. Main physiological and productive parameters on grapes and quality parameters on must and wine were collected. The results show a great difference in production between years. In 2009, the production of PRD increased compared to RDI. The sub-treatment 40% ETc showed the highest water use efficiency. In 2010, total soluble solid content in must was significantly greater in RDI 80% ETc compared to RDI 40% Etc, due to the volume of irrigation, and compared to PRD 80% ETc. Total acidity of must was significantly affected by irrigation treatments in 2010 and 2011. Among the wines there was a better aroma in the PRD 80% ETc wine (2009). In 2009, PRD showed a significantly lower level of stomatal conductance, whereas in 2010 a significantly higher net photosynthesis was observed in RDI. PRD 40% ETc was the most attractive irrigation treatment in terms of production, water use efficiency and quality parameters of must and wine, particularly in 2010.
