Calcium supplements: does the milkman know best?
1987
A brief commentary notes that the publicized availability of calcium (Ca) supplemented milk may mislead postmenopausal women to believe that such milk may decrease osteoporosis risk, such that they may not seek proper therapy that actually protects their bones (i.e., hormone replacement therapy with low-dose estrogen, coupled with a progestagen to protect against estrogen-induced endometrial carcinoma). The results of a 2-year study with postmenopausal women are cited that reported maintenance of bone mineral content with estrogen and a decline in bone mineral content with Ca supplements or placebo.(wz)
