A comparison of bromegrass and orchard grass pastures
1944
Fuelleman, R.F. | Burlison, W.L. | Kammlade, W.G.
Seedlings of alfalfa alone and with bromegrass and orchard grass and of orchard grass and bromegrass seeded alone were made in 1938. All came up to good stands. Comparative forage production over a period of 5 years showed that largest yields were obtained on pastures containing alfalfa. Likewise, animal gains per acre were greater on these pastures. Grasses seeded alone produced approximately 40% less forage and 50% smaller gains in live weight. Chemical analyses indicated a very favorable increase in protein and calcium content of the mixtures where alfalfa was seeded with either bromegrass or orchard grass.
