Nutritional copper deficiency in a Japanese infant on formula

Tanaka, Yoshito | Hatano, Shūichi | Nishi, Yoshikazu | Usui, Tomofusa
Copper deficiency resulted in a 7-month-old infant fed only powdered milk since birth. Symptoms included severe meritropenia, anemia, diarrhea, bone marrow disorder and osteoporosis. Serum copper concentration and the copper content of red blood cells was monitored. Treatment of oral doses of copper sulfate was well tolerated in the patient and produced dramatic improvement of all symptoms. The low copper content of powdered milk in Japan can result in copper deficiency of infants nourished with powdered milk alone; as soon as solid foods are eaten, however, the deficiency is reversed.
