A study of recovery efficiency of a series of volatile compounds trapped on reverse-phase C18-bonded silica has shown that reverse-phase silica is a useful addition to the existing range of adsorbents available for headspace volatile concentration and analysis. A gas chromatography comparison of the airborne volatiles from black pepper (Piper nigrum) and banana pseudostem (Musa sp) recovered from reverse-phase silica, activated charcoal and Porapak Q traps shows no qualitative differences in the components present.
