Adipose tissue cellularity and weight reduction forecasting

Short-term weight loss forecasting is possible when body weight and adipose tissue cellularity are taken into account, since they closely condition the results of diet therapy. This knowledge permits the establishment of goals for a therapeutic program. Age of onset of obesity also seems to be an important factor. Tests with 76 obese female outpatients on controlled 1000 kcal diets show that weight after 6 months of treatment was directly correlated with initial body weight. At 12 months, patients with weight gain showed a significantly higher mean fat cell number, and those with weight loss, a higher mean adipose cell weight. Weight gain patients also had a more youthful mean age of onset of obesity, and weight loss patients an older mean age of onset. Although these factors are highly important, psychological and behavior-oriented factors also play an important role in individual cases.
