Estimating the proportion of degradable dry weight of kikuyu from rates of lamina senescence
1987
Murtagh, G.J.
The proportion of degradable dry weight in lamina of kikuyu, was estimated from an analysis of the rate of lamina senescence in dense swards when senescence was initiated by shading. It was assumed that laminae in the dark remained green until all energy reserves, including degradable structural dry weight, were exhausted and then laminae died. The specific maintenance respiration rate defined the rate of energy use. The estimated proportion of degradable dry weight increased from 0.10 at 15 °C to 0.18 at 30 °C, with corresponding specific maintenance respiration rates of 10.9 and 37.0 mg d. wt (g d. wt)−1 d−1 respectively. Similar results were obtained when maintenance respiration was expressed per unit weight of protein.
