Role of Agricultural and Allied Sectors in Economic Development

Considering the need of statistical data on various indicators for making the policy for agricultural development, the present study has presented some such major indicators for the state of Maharashtra as well as the country. The data for the study were collected on such aspects as changes in the size of operational holdings; sector-wise per cent share in GDP; shifts in cropping pattern; growth rates in area, production and productivity; trade balance, etc. for the past 60 years (1951–2011) for Maharashtra and India from different published sources. The study has revealed that Maharashtra ranked first in the production of jowar, pigeon pea, onion, grapes, guava and pomegranate in the country and India ranked first in the production of sorghum and banana in the world. During the period 1960–2011, the production has increased of total cereals, total pulses, total foodgrains and total oilseeds in Maharashtra and of jowar, bajra, rice, total cereals, total pulses, cotton, total foodgrains at all-India level. The share of non-foodgrain crops has increased and of foodgrain crops has declined in the cropping pattern of both Maharashtra and the county, pointing diversification in agriculture. The percentage share of primary sector in the GDP has declined at both state and all-India levels.
