Adolescent nutrition as it relates to cardiovascular disease and reproductive capacity later in life
1981
Valadian, Isabelle | Berkey, Catherine | Reed, Robert B.
A longitudinal study of 67 females began in the 1930's, continued for 18 years, and then reexamined the subjects in their early 30's and again in early 40's; the objectives were to determine the continuity of dietary patterns, the effects of diet on reproductive performance, and the relationship of blood pressure in young adults to adolescent diet. Dietary information was restricted to caloric and protein (animal and plant) intakes. Dietary patterns in adulthood were significantly related to those of late adolescence, but not early, particularly for caloric intake. Reproductive performance was assessed by abnormal events (toxemia, miscarriage, etc.) in relation to number of pregnancies; the relation to diet seemed confined to animal protein intake prior to the maximum growth period. A tenuous link was found between the pattern of blood pressure, caloric intake and excess weight in adolescence and a similar tendency in adulthood.
