Effects of whole corn kernels and extracts on behavior of maize weevil (Coleoptera: Curculionidae)

Several extracts, and fractions thereof derived from corn genotypes A619 and B37, were tested for their attraction and oviposition-stimulating effects on Sitophilus zeamais Motschulsky. Although inbred genotypes A619 and B37 were previously characterized as susceptible and resistant to S. oryzae, in this study the extracts were not generally attractive at the concentrations tested. However, of several fractions that were repellent, those derived from B37 exhibited greatest repellency. Oviposition stimulation was noted in tests with certain B37-derived extracts and fractions. Materials derived from A619 did not stimulate oviposition in any test. Although maize weevils were differentially attracted to whole kernels of 10 different genotypes, attraction was not related to relative resistance of the genotype.
