Etiology of growth failure in a clinic population
1976
Larkin, Frances A.
Extract: The characteristics of 124 preschool children with apparent growth failure were compared with those of a control group of 89 with a higher level of achievement in stature and weight. Following a home interview, information from the two groups was compared. The children who experienced growth failure were slightly older than the control children. There was no significant difference between the two groups as to mother's age at delivery, education, income, and birthplace of the parents, or recent health problems of the mother or child. The growth failure children had had lower birth weights. Mothers of these children had tended to feel somewhat unhappy with the prospective additional family member prior to delivery. The families of the group with inadequate growth bought more Food Stamps and had higher monthly credit payments. Therewas no significant difference between the two groups in diet scores based on food frequency interviews.
