Insect Resistance Factor in Soybean PI's 229358 and 227687 Demonstrated by Grafting
1984
Lambert, Lavone | Kilen, T. C.
Soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] plant introductions (PI) 229358 and 227687 have been reported to be resistant and the cultivar Davis to be susceptible to foliar-feeding by corn earworm, Heliothis zea (Boddie). A bioassay technique utilizing expanding leaves from non-grafted and reciprocally-grafted Davis, PI 229358, and PI 227687 plants was used to determine if resistance or susceptibility is conditioned by translocated factors. Corn earworm larvae reared on leaves from non-grafted Davis plants were significantly (P = 0.01) larger on Day 16 than larvae reared on leaves from Davis scions or stocks of reciprocallygrafted plants. Larvae reared on leaves from non-grafted PI plants were significantly (P = 0.01) smaller than larvae reared on leaves from non-grafted Davis plants, but were not significantly smaller than larvae reared on leaves from PI scions or stocks of reciprocally-grafted plants. Thus, a resistance factor which is translocated throughout the leaves is indicated for PI 229358 and PI 227687. Translocatable factors which condition susceptibility were not indicated.
