Formation and breakdown of Azolla polypeptides in paddy soils
1984
Newton, J.W. | Tyler, D.D.
The total polypeptide patterns of Azolla caroliniana and symbiotic algae grown on 14CO2 were examined by isoelectric focusing followed by SDS polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The number of resolvled polypeptides was greater in algal than in plant extracts. A component always found in N-fixing Azolla was cyanophycin, indicating that a substantial fraction of Azolla nitrogen is reserve polypeptide derived from senescent forms of the symbiont. 14C-Labeled cyanophycin was rapidly broken down in paddy soils with release of 14CO2. Hence, cyanophycin could serve as a major source of available N in paddy soils.
