Two experiments of 21 days' duration were conducted to determine the effect of increasing the anion content of the diet with phosphorus on growth and blood parameters of growing chicks. Hubbard x Arbor Acres cockerels were fed the experimental diets composed primarily of corn and soybean meal and containing 1% calcium. In Trial 1, the diets contained .25, .30, .35, .40, .45 or .50% phosphorus, non-phytate. The increased levels of phosphorus produced linear increases in body weight, varus deformation and dyschondroplasia and linear decreases in blood pH, HCO3- and base excess. Body weight was correlated with varus deformation and dyschondroplasia and negatively correlated with blood pH, HCO3- and base excess. Varus deformation was correlated with dyschondroplasia and negatively correlated with blood pH, HCO3 and base excess. Dyschondroplasia was negatively correlated with HCO3 and base excess.
