A more rational approach to the feeding of young infants whose nutrition is compromised by inborn errors of metabolism would be to begin with the composition of human milk and then specifically modify the synthetic product to fit the needs of the individual patient. Four milk products used for treating metabolic errors were compared. The four products were tabulated for their contents according to the manufacturer's stated contents and compared to a table of mean values of human milk of well-nourished women at least 1 month postpartum. All four products varied greatly in content and deviated in many ways from human milk. Published data defining human milk are summarized in an appendix.
