Nutritional assessment and food intake before and during hospitalization of 56 elderly patients admitted to general care service in 3 Nordic hospitals revealed that 36 per cent of the patients were at risk for developing energy undernutrition (below 90 kJ/day/kg body weight) during hospitalization. While mean protein intakes did not differ significantly between hospitalization and home, mean energy intakes for both sexes were lower during hospitalization than at home. The results suggest that the minimum energy intake for these subjects to maintain body weight is 120 kJ/day/kg and that regular nutritional assessment be carried out.(wz)
