The investigation on ‘Ovipositional preference and development of Callosobruchus maculatus (Coleoptera: Bruchidae), on different cowpea cultivars’ with specific objectives was carried out at College of Agriculture Dapoli, Ratnagiri (M.S.). Pulse beetle is a serious pest of all stored pulses and taken as a great roll of all these pulses in filed and storage in particular. Present investigation was carried out to see the varietal performance of cowpea against oviposition by C. maculatus female. During present investigation nine promising cultivars of cowpea were screened under laboratory conditions to study ovipositional preference and development of C. maculatus. The ovipositional preference was studied by designing an olfactrometer. The average number of eggs laid ranged from 26.67 to 54.00 eggs/30 seeds. The incubation period was not much varied, ranged from 3.86 to 4.41 with a mean of 4.08 days. The total developmental (larval-pupal period together) period ranged from 22.86 to 26.60 days on various varieties/genotypes. The overall result concluded that, all the cowpea cultivars were found equally susceptible to bruchids infestation and none was found totally free from its infestation.
