Introduction: Recent perspectives on hypertension and the heart
1979
Tarazi, Robert C.
Hypertension is an important cause of cardiac disability. High cardiac output has been observed in hypertensive patients. The cardiogenic role of increased cardiac output has been studied in the initiation of hypertension. The heart may also be a source of cardiovascular pressor reflexes. Large differentials in pressure across the heart may help control the circulation. Hypertension appears to be completely related to cardiac hypertrophy; antihypertensive therapy reverses some ventricular hypertrophy. Experimental models of hypertension have been useful in defining these relationships. Biochemical studies of myocardial changes associated with hypertension have resulted in new drug therapies. Collagen content of blood vessel walls may function in vascular complications of hypertension. Collagen content of blood vessel walls may function in vascular complications of hypertension. Studies of circulatory control and blood flow have examined hemodynamic factors affecting hypertension. The relation between hormones such as renin, aldosterone and angiotension, and hypertension is being investigated.
