Three case studies link high sodium concentrations in breast milk to hypernatremia in infants. A 15 day old infant was admitted to a New Jersey hospital with severe malnutrition and dehydration. The child had been nursing regularly every 2-3 hours. There was no vomiting or diarrhea. The child was treated with intravenous therapy and released in good condition after 3 weeks. During the admission the mother's milk was tested for its sodium content which was markedly high.
