Fruits from Prunus domestica cv 'Ranha Claudia Verde' were harvested in two consecutive years, from two production sites ('Cano' and 'Vila Viosa'). Fruits were collected and tested periodically for weight, firmness, solids soluble content, titratable acidity and ethylene production rate. It was also evaluated the level of potassium (K), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), and nitrogen (N), in the fruit flesh and in the soil. Fruits from 'Cano' exhibited a lower flesh Ca/K ratio and a shorter postharvest life than fruits from 'Vila Viosa'. During storage fruits with a lower Ca/K ratio exhibited a lower firmness. The results support the hypothesis that the excessive potassium in 'Cano' soil might interfere with calcium uptake and affected the Ca/K fruit content. It is also suggested that high levels of nitrogen in this soil, might caused a dilution of calcium in the fruit flesh due to high vegetative growth.
