Aflatoxin B1 content of naturally contaminated maize was reduced from 750 to 7 mu g/kg by ammoniation. A 29 t stationary bed of maize was treated during warm weather with a recycling ammonia-air mixture in a sealed, outdoor metal grain storage-drying bin. The maize was moisture conditioned from 12 to 17.5% (w.b.) and 1.5% (d.b.) ammonia was added, after which it was held 13 days at 32 - 43 deg C and dried to <11% m.c. The decontaminated maize, an ammoniated good maize, and their unammoniated counterparts are being evaluated in feeding tests with pigs and laying hens.
