Effects of diet, energy restriction and diabetes on hexose transport in the rat
1979
Wilson, Helen D. | Schedl, H.P.
Effects of dietary composition, diabetes, and energy restriction of differing carbohydrate of protein content, were examined in rats. Hexose absorption was measured by luminal perfusion of the entire small intestine in situ. Specific absorption of the mucosa was calculated. Carbohydrate enhanced while protein suppressed hexose absorption. All the dietary carbohydrates used had the same absorption rate. Diabetic rats showed the same absorption rate as the control group for carbohydrates but greater than that of protein-fed controls. When two of the three stimuli were combined the effect was not additive. The absorption was independent of dietary composition. Responsiveness of the intestine to these stimuli indicates that these effects may be widespread and of importance to human health.
