Trainer-trainee communication is essential for successful inservice training programs. Although the choice of topics to be covered is most important, the points of reference of the trainer (a director) and the unit manager to be trained are different, leading to different topic needs. Directors have long range decisions, unit managers short term. Directors offices may be removed from the area of food production. Directors and unit managers may disagree on the relative importance of certain job responsibilities. Also, lack of unit manager input during training may lead to false director conclusions about training needs and interests. The solution to these problems is very simple: directors should ask unit managers what their training needs are.
