The goal of this study was to determine the effect of organic mulch on organic matter content in the soil and the performance of blackberry in terms of yield and growth. During June 1999, 500 plants of blackberry cv. Cheyenne were planted in Guerrero Valley, Chihuahua, Mexico. Distances were 1.5 m between rows and 1 m between plants. The area is temperate with temperatures of -20 degrees C in winter. The soil is shallow (40 cm depth) and sandy and has low fertility (0.253% organic matter), with furrow irrigation. In March 2000, the following treatments were applied in two lines 50 m each: 1) 3 kg of dry manure plant(-1) plus oat straw mulching, 15 cm thick; 2) 3 kg of dry manure plant(-1) plus pine sawdust mulching, 15 cm thick; and 3) 3 kg of dry manure plant(-1). Results showed that the flowering of blackberry cv. Cheyenne evades late frost. The period between flowering and fruit ready to harvest was 47 to 55 days. Average fruit weight was 4.5 g. The harvest period is from the third week of June to the third week of August. Dry manure plus oat straw resulted in the best cane growth, fructification, and yield. All treatments increased the content of organic matter in soil.
