Uranium is a rare element dispersed throughout most soils. To increase knowledge of this heavy element in Illinois and North-Central U.S. Soils, U was determined by the nuclear particle track etch procedure in 153 surface horizons soils. Mean U content was 3.39 mg kg⁻¹, the standard deviation was 0.85 mg kg⁻¹ and the range was 1.24 to 7.73 mg kg⁻¹. The contents were normally distributed. No significant differences occurred in U contents between groupings of Alfisols vs. Mollisols, between groupings by moisture regimes, and by degree of weathering represented by soils of southern Illinois with and without fragipan horizons. Uranium concentration in Illinois surface soils is very similar to that found in several studies of surface soils in conterminous USA. Contribution from the Univ. of Illinois Agric. Exp. Stn.
