New sweet cherry genotypes from Research Station for Fruit Growing Iaşi, Romania

The breeding programme objectives at the Research Station for Fruit Growing, Iaşi are aimed to the continuous improvement of the sweet cherry assortment in the northeastern area of Romania. During the period 1994-2015, 28 new sweet cherry cultivars have been obtained through controlled hybridization, open pollination and clonal selection. The study has been taken in the three-year period (2011-2013), having as research material nine sweet cherry selections from which four ('Moldavia', 'Elaiaşi', 'Coralis' and 'Amaris') have been approved in 2015, and five of them are still in tests. Tree vigour, resistance to frost and cherry leaf spot (Blumeriella jaapii), main phenological stages, yield (kg tree-1) and physico-chemical characteristics of the fruits have been analysed. The highest values of fruit weight (8.9-9.4 g) were registered for 'Moldavia', 'Coralis' and 'Elaiaşi'. The values of soluble solids content ranged from 15.3 to 18.8 °Brix, titratable acidity 0.4-1.1 mg malic acid 100 mL-1 fresh juice, and total content of polyphenols 146-751 mg GAE 100 mL-1 fresh juice.
