Health implications of wheat fiber
1985
Anderson, J.W.
Various aspects of the benefits of dietary fiber are reviewed and discussed. The reported effects of wheat fiber intake on bowel function, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, coronary heart disease (CHD), hypertension, and colon cancer prevention are examined. The review concludes that what foods as major sources of dietary fibers offer both well-defined and potential health benefits, but much research to quantify these effects is needed. A number of hypotheses are reviewed. Limited information indicates that wheat foods and wheat fiber have important effects on color function and may reduce serum triglycerides, CHD risk or protect against carbohydrate-induced hypertriglyceridemia and colon cancer, but additional well-designed studies are necessary.(wz)
