Linoleic acid and blood pressure

An epidemiological survey of 650 healthy German males demonstrated a significant strong negative correlation between the relative linoleic acid content of adipose tissue and blood pressure. Dietary intakes of linoleic acid as determined by 24-hour dietary recall positively correlated with urinary sodium concentration and urinary volume, and negatively correlated with serum sodium concentration. Thus, high dietary linoleic acid intakes may lower blood pressure by increasing sodium excretion in the urine. This effect may be mediated via prostaglandins. Linoleic acid is a precursor in prostaglandin synthesis and prostaglandins are known to be involved in blood pressure regulation. These epidemiological data confirm experimental reports of the blood pressure lowering effect of linoleic acid.
