Statistics obtained from demographic studies of children in the United States are reported by category: (1) number--29.6 percent of the population in 1977 compared with 34.0 percent in 1970; (2) family type--78 percent lived in traditional husband-wife families in 1978 compared with 86 percent in 1970; (3) race--83 percent white, 15 percent black and 2 percent other races in 1978; (4) education--90 percent of all children age 3-17 years were enrolled in some sort of school in 1977 compared with 96 percent in 1970; and (5) child care. Statistics in all categories are further broken down.
