Evolution of acidity, organic matter content, and cec in uncultivated soils of north belgium during the past 25 years

To measure the soil acidification that has taken place in North Blegium during the last 25 years, soil profile samples were taken in forests and fallows. About 100 locations have been investigated, corresponding to sample locations of the Belgian soil cartography, between 1950 and 1967. Most soils are poor sandy soils, others being loamy soils. Major soil classifications are podsols, regosols, gray podsolic and brown podsolic.Soil pH (H2O and KCl), organic matter contents, and CEC were measured and were compared with the previously measured values of these parameters.From the results it appears that in all investigated soil types a statistically significant acidification of the soil solution has occurred during the last 25 years. A total acidification (based on pH KCl) significant at the 95% level has been found only in the upper layers of podsols and regosols (up to 30 to 40 cm), but not in loamy soils or brown podsolic soils.The acidification coincides with an accumulation of organic matter in all soils, and with decreasing CEC in most sandy soils but increasing CEC in loamy soils.
