The starch status during growth and development of strawberry plant under tropical climatic condition

The level of starch accumulation in two commercial strawberry cultivars, ‘Camarosa’ and ‘Camaroga’, grown under tropical highlands climatic condition was investigated at the Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute Station in Cameron Highlands, Malaysia. Factorial experiment was designed with three factors: factor of plant parts (leaf blade, petiole, crown and root); factor of cultivars (‘Camarosa’ and ‘Camaroga’); and factor of growth stages (transplanting, bud proliferation and flowering stages). The result showed that ‘Camarosa’ accumulated more starch than ‘Camaroga’ in all plant parts at all growth stages. Petiole was the highest plant part containing starch, while the crown was the lowest part accumulating the starch. The result showed that the level of starch was significantly lower at the flowering stage as compared with those at the earlier stages, particularly in ‘Camaroga’. The result also revealed that the starch content was more rapidly changed in the crown than in the roots and petiole. Starch content was highest in the root and petiole of ‘Camarosa’, and lowest in the roots of ‘Camaroga’. Thus, starch content in strawberry varies in different cultivars, different plant parts and different growth stages. The result of this study indicated that the assimilation of starch in vegetative parts during growth and development of strawberry is better in ‘Camaroga’ than in ‘Camarosa’ even though starch content in ‘Camarosa’ was higher than in ‘Camaroga’. These data could probably be used to manipulate the yield of strawberry.
