Assessing the safety of distributed krill oil products in Korea

After the release of the Krill Oil Safety Report from the MFDS, we elucidated whether the safety and quality of commercial krill oil products changed. The fatty acid composition, acidity, ethoxyquin, antioxidants (such as butylated hydroxyanisole), and heavy metal content of thirty krill oil products, including those directly purchased from overseas, were examined. In the fatty acid composition analysis, two products exceeded the linoleic acid standard of ≤3%, with percentages of 30.8 and 30.7%, respectively. One was a domestic product, and the other was foreign. All products met domestic standards during acid value analysis, and the value increased as the remaining shelf life decreased. Ethoxyquin or ethoxyquin-dimer was detected in eight products, but all were below the limit of detection (LOD <10 μg/kg ). O ne o f the detection products had a higher ethoxyquin value (9.3 μg/kg) than the others. Heavy metal (Pb, Cd, As) levels were satisfactory according to the criteria. The range of heavy metal concentrations in krill oil products was: Pb, ND-0.125 mg/kg; Cd, ND-0.039 mg/kg; As, 0.004-0.071 mg/kg. All other antioxidants (PG, BHA, BHT, TBHQ) were undetected and met the Act for Labeling on Foods. All other products managed by domestic standards (excluding discontinued products) complied with the standards. However, the products purchased directly from overseas must be periodically verified.
